Estonia is the headliner at Turku Book Fair 2018

The theme for the Turku Book Fair this year is Estonia, which is also celebrating its centenary in 2018. During the fair, taking place from the 5th to 7th of October, a broad array of the country’s contemporary writers will be featured, among them Kai Aarelaed, Paavo Matsin, Valdur Mikita and Andrei Ivanov.

The Estonian Institute in Finland, the Embassy of Finland in Estonia, the Tuglas Society and the Association of Estonia Societies in Finland are responsible for the programme. Finland’s First Lady, Jenni Haukio, will also be involved in planning the Estonia theme.

“Recent history is strongly present in Estonia’s literature, which delves into areas that were previously silent, stifled. But it also takes a look at Estonia’s deep roots. It is worth noting that Estonia is a nation of prolific writing and publishing. An entirely new generation of writers has emerged in the country, most of whom are still relatively unknown to Finns – and they will be featured at the Turku Book Fair,” says Sanna Immanen, Head of the Estonian Institute in Finland.

Several fair talks will feature Estonian and Finnish authors, and readers will have the opportunity to chat with writers from their neighbouring country at blogger events.

In addition to fiction and non-fiction, the line-up will include popular travel literature focussing on Estonia. Estonian children’s literature has been translated into Finnish less extensively, but some translations expected this autumn will be featured at the Book Fair.

Estonia will take the fair’s youngest visitors into account and, for instance, children’s workshop activities are planned.
